SINGLE
WOMEN RAISING SONS
Mckesson
Foundation Underwritten Workshop Helps Moms Develop Balanced
Men
This summer, Parental Stress Service hosted Jay
Townsend for a workshop designed to help single mothers understand
the unique needs of young boys as they develop into young men.
This workshop was developed for any woman raising a male child.
Participants were encouraged to go beyond their roles as "task-givers"
and to become more emotionally supportive to their sons needs.
Jay Townsend provided a holistic workshop combining psychological,
spiritual and common sense principles to contemporary parenting
issues.
PSS
MOVES FORWARD TO BE HIPAA COMPLIANT
PSS has been developing policies and procedures
in regard to privacy under the Health
Insurance Portability and Acountability Act (HIPAA) rules
and regulations to be in compliance by the April 14th deadline.
This includes over 27 individual policies and procedures, a
set of forms that are required, and mandatory training to all
staff before the deadline. On April 1st, staff was trained by
the PSS HIPAA team, led by Janet Beaty (Privacy Officer), along
with MIS staff members Mahal Torres (Security Director) and
Daniel Boyson (Security Officer). This team attended training
and devoted a substantial amount of time and resources in order
to ensure that PSS is compliant with HIPAA rules and regulations
by the April 14th deadline. The training included an extensive
Powerpoint presentation show followed by a review of the Notice
of Privacy and a question and answer session.

PSS
Purchases The Grove Building in Oakland!
|
|
We are delighted to announce that PSS became the proud owner
of the Grove Building in late December. The acquisition of this
beautiful, lovingly restored and maintained 20,000 sq. ft. building
is the successful fruition of almost 2 years of planning, negotiating
and fundraising. We could not have done it without the support
and effort of many individuals in the community.

A special thank you to Alameda County Supervisors
Haggerty, Carson, and Steele, Oakland City Councilperson Nadel, and
former Grove Building owners Tim and Roberta McCoy.
The McCoys were not only great landlords during the years PSS leased
space, but also bent over backwards to make this sale a reality. In
addition, PSS is named the irrevocable beneficiary of the Charitable
Remainder Trust (CRT), which the McCoys created to shelter the assets
of the Grove Building. The benefit of the CRT, the ability to stabilize
space-costs, and the certainty of more space when PSS needs it, have
all created a tremendous legacy for this fine organization.
PSS will continue to use the Grove Building as a service location for
our north Alameda County families. We are researching other community
needs as well, needs that might well be met within the Grove Building.
And we are very much enjoying the continuing relationship with our neighbors,
the other fine tenants of the Grove Building. In our new role of building
owner, we strive to be good community neighbors, not just by continuing
to offer exemplary service to our clients, and also to participate in
the larger revitalization of Oaklandís downtown.

In December the East Bay Community Foundation and BART
introduced the Tiny Tickets Program to encourage BART riders to donate
the unused portion of their BART tickets to local nonprofit organizations.
We invite you to participate in this exciting program.
"Tiny Tickets" are those hoards of BART tickets,
often discarded or left in pockets or drawers, that have tiny bits of
value left on them and could be turned into cash. BART has estimated
that the cash value of these outstanding "Tiny Tickets" ranges
from $300,000 to $2 million annually. Although currently the residual
value of tickets may be consolidated, refunded or exchanged by BART,
the majority of such tickets are left unused. The Tiny Tickets Program
will allow these resources to provide needed support to Parental Stress
Service.

Success!
|
|
We celebrated 30 years of service to our community and our purchase
of the Grove Building, on September 21st. Everyone who attended
our event enjoyed a sunny, warm day of fun, food, great music
and amazing entertainment. When you visit our page with the pictures
you'll discover scenes of Ballet Folklorico, the Prescott Clowns,
the United Capoeira Association, the Oakland Military Institute
Drill Team, the McBride School of Dancers, the White Horse Harpers,
and the Starry Plough Musicians.
The children enjoyed the entertainment, the Book Mobile, the
face painting and the snow cones. Some even toured the fire engine.
Many of the children went home with stuffed animals donated by

Mother's
& Father's Day Parent Appreciation Program
Do you agonize over what pretty knick-knack or bouquet of flowers to
get your Mom each May? Or how about Dad and his unworn collection of
Father's Day ties, or burgeoning box of the latest gadgets? We'd like
to offer a solution that could make gift giving easy. A donation to
Parental Stress Service in appreciation of your Mom or Dad, or that
specal person who guided you through the rough spots life throws our
way. We'll send them a lovely card, noting your contribution in appreciation
of all their efforts. If you like, we'll also mention them in our next
newsletter. Best of all, they will know that your gift has the added
value of helping to strengthen familes in need.
