In January 2000, PSS launched the second CalWORKs
program. PSS' new program outposts staff on four community college
campuses where there are substantial numbers of CalWORKs recipients
enrolled as students. These campuses include the four Peralta
Colleges: Laney, Merritt, Vista, and Alameda. PSS offers workshops,
support groups and personal individual/or family counseling to
help these CalWORKs students stay in school. They face balancing
the often stressful responsibilities of raising small children,
while striving to stay in school.
Both PSS CalWORKs programs are truly community-base,
mandating extensive collaboration with other community resources,
including: Alameda County Access Program; Asian Community Mental
Health Services; Eden Children's Services; Highland Hospital's
Substance Abuse Program; Hume Center; Oakland Children's Services;
Second Chance, Inc.; West Oakland Health Council, Inc.; and Laney,
Merritt, Alameda and Vista Colleges.
